Introduction

For this module we will use the term ‘principles’ rather than practice aspects to be consistent with the literature on trauma informed care. According to Hopper et al (2010) there are four principles of trauma-informed care that emerge from the literature. These are:

  • trauma awareness
  • emphasis on safety
  • opportunities to rebuild control
  • strengths-based approach

More detail on each of these TIC principles is provided below, as well as information on ways of supporting a young person’s recovery from trauma.
