Disulfram (Antabuse®)

  • primarily works by inhibiting the action of an enzyme involved in the metabolism of alcohol – the conversion of acetaldehyde to acetate
  • this inhibition leads to accumulation of acetaldehyde following consumption of alcohol, the resulting unpleasant symptoms – flushing, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, irregular heartbeat, breathlessness and headache – are due to the toxicity of accumulated acetaldehyde
  • acts as a deterrent to drinking because the individual expects to experience these negative consequences
  • appears to be most effective when the medication is provided to the individual under supervision
