Concentration and attention

The ability to concentrate and focus one’s attention on learning a skill or gaining important knowledge is essential for success in life. Concentration involves directing attention to a task. When the mind is focused, energy is not dissipated onto irrelevant thoughts and other distractions. Young people’s aptitude for concentration varies but it is a skill that can be developed. Better concentration enables young people to:

  • Apply themselves to fulfill aspirations and achieve goals
  • Gain mastery over tasks required for participation in valued recreational pursuits, education and work
  • Improve their memory
  • Develop increased capacity to regulate their emotions (increased emotional resilience).
